Migrating To Cloud – Computing

Why and who should move on to cloud?

Cloud computing is the latest trends in IT which uses shared resources over the Internet . Cloud computing resources are dynamically scalable and often provide virtualized resources over the Internet platform. The users of cloud need not be too much worried about the technology infrastructure behind the cloud. Most cloud computing infrastructures consist of services delivered through common centers and built on servers. Clouds often appear as single points of access for consumers’ computing needs.

The customers to the cloud consume resources as a service and pay only for resources that they use. Using cloud physical resource usage can be extended to its maximum. For small and medium enterprises as in many cases they cannot afford the large capital expenditure of their IT infrastructure. It is good choice for them to move on to cloud since they have to pay only for the resources that is being used.

Cloud computing users avoid capital expenditure on hardware, software, and services. Other benefits of this approach are low barriers to entry, shared infrastructure and costs, low management overhead, and immediate access to a broad range of applications. Also it implements the better utilization of resources .So it cuts down the downtime.

Cloud deployment models:

Public cloud:

It refers to the resources that the service provider offers over Internet. The recourses mentioned can be either hardware ,software or application public cloud follows ‘Pay as you go’ model since we have to pay only for the resources that we are using. We can get canceled the contract with the service provider at any time. The advantages of public cloud are you don’t have to worry about the underlying infrastructure, software upgrades and the security.

Private cloud:

It is suitable for large organization needs. A private cloud typically involves the optimizing the performance of the existing IT infrastructure of larger Organizations. It provides grater flexibility with the management of resources since it can be upgraded according to the organization requirement. Also response time will be better than the public cloud. Private clouds have attracted criticism because users “still have to buy, build, and manage them” and thus do not benefit from lower up-front capital costs and less hands-on management

Hybrid cloud:

It is the mixed form of public and private cloud. It takes the advantages of the two cloud infrastructures. It is possible to critical applications of the organizations hosted on their private cloud which will have some special security and is behind additional firewall softwares. And it is possible for organizations to keep their less critical applications on the public cloud.

Who is moving into cloud?

Movement into Public cloud:

Large organizations are now changing into public cloud to host their non critical applications such as document management systems, mailing , CRM and Learning Solutions etc. While critical applications are hosted in their private cloud to which at most care of security is needed. It is done in the point of view of their audit requirements also. Public cloud is highly scalable flexible and reliable since there is no upfront commitments and initial costs. Also regarding application development we can adopt faster changes associated with it much easier through the adoption of platform as a service .Another aspect is that the presence of large mobile work force in organizations that need the access to application on the go.

Before moving into the public cloud the organizations should be aware of the security systems of their vendor since security is a crucial thing regarding the business information. It is also important to avoid cloud lock-in. There should be an end point security mechanism in place since continuous connectivity with the cloud is the greatest threat.

Movement into private cloud:

A private cloud is implemented either internally or in partnership basis. Larger organizations is now migrating to private cloud in order to optimize their IT infrastructure performance .Most enterprises already started their IT infrastructure to move into private cloud to improve their performance. As private cloud technologies get adopted ,IT managers will start to grow comfortable with the cloud technologies inside their walls. As a result they will start to adopt cost effective methods to reduce cost for their IT infrastructures. In the case of private cloud storage consolidation alone can realize grater savings.

Movement into Hybrid cloud:

In order to get the advantages of both private and public cloud the future trend will be more towards Hybrid cloud. Hybrid architecture is a more sophisticated one since applications from the two cloud architecture get integrated in it. It would become necessary to have the hybrid architecture is in the right way so that they support the loosely coupled private and public cloud architectures. In this the mission critical applications are hosted on-premise cloud and non mission applications will be moved into the public cloud.
